Thomas Jefferson and Interesting facts

I have decided to look at some Presidents and list some facts about them that most of us may not have known. The first United States President that I will look at will be Thomas Jefferson.

Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, in Virginia and Died on July 4trh, 1826 on the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Thomas Jefferson is best known for his role in writing of the declaration of independence, for his two terms as President and for his face on the nickel.

Here are some fact about Thomas Jefferson that you may not have known

#9 Jefferson the Musician. Thomas Jefferson took violin lessons as a child. He even, courted his future wife, Martha Skelton.

#8 Jefferson the Astronomer. Thomas Jefferson loved the stars as he did reading. He even made sure astronomy was taught at the University of Virginia, and he designated what may have been the first observatory in the United States.

#7 Jefferson the Architect. He designed the rotunda for the University of Virginia and for his own home in Monticello and for the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond.

#6 Jefferson and Wine Thomas Jefferson brought his love of fine wine back to America. He had two vineyards at Monticello, which he apparently used to experiment with. Acknowledged as a great wine expert of early America, he sought to promote wine as an alternative to whiskey and cider.

#5 Thomas Jefferson as a writer. Jefferson was a prolific writer during his lifetime, with authorships of the Declaration of Independence and the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. The Thomas Jefferson Papers at the Library of Congress includes about 27,000 documents, including his extensive correspondence with key historical figures.

#4 Jefferson was the only President who never vetoed a bill. Thomas Jefferson was the first two term president who never veto any bills.

#3 Jefferson was very religious. Jefferson was a religious man but his beliefs caused much controversy. He was raised as an Anglican, but grew up to be an opponent of all organized religion.
#2 Jefferson and economist. He believed in the free market polices and opposed bank notes as currency.

#1 Jefferson and his love of books. After he left office as president, he sold his library of 6,500 volumes to the Library of Congress after it was ransacked by the British. He needed the cash to pay off debts, but started to buy more books.

FINAL LOCATIONS OF THE SPACE SHUTTLES

Here is a complete list of the locations of where all of the space shuttles and where they are at:

 

  Enterprise:   Shuttle prototype used in jetliners-drop tests over Edward Air Force base in California in 1977 and never flew in space.  The Enterprise was original on display in the Smithson Institute in Virginia and was flown to New York City this past April and was moved to the Interpid Sea, Air and Space Museum in June.

 Columbia:   Destroyed during descent on February 1, 2003 after 28 missions dating back to 1981.  All 7 astronauts were killed.  The wreckage is stored at NASA’s vehicle assembly building at Kennedy Space Center for research.

Challenger:  Destroyed during launch on February 28, 1986 after 10 missions dating back to 1983.  7 astronauts were killed.

Discover:    Discover was moved to Smithson Inst. Hanger in Northern Virginia in April after 39 mission dating back to 1984.

Atlantis:  Moved to Kennedy Space Center after 33 missions dating back to 1985.

 Endeavour:  Moved to Los Angeles and placed at the California Science Center in October of 2012.  After 25 mission dating back to 1992 and this shuttle replaced the Challenger.

Hiring Military Veterans is good for business, according to a new study.

A research conducted by the Washington Think Tank Center for a new American Security, the study uncovered why companies hire veterans and the challenges they force in doing so.

69 business were examined, including At and T, Bank of America, The Boeing Co, Kraft Foods and Pepsi Co provided a number of reasons behind their decisions to hire veterans, including:

1.  Leadership and Teamwork Skills:   Veterans typically have led colleagues, accepted direction from others and operated as part of a small team.

2. Character:   Veterans are perceived as being trustworthy, dependable, drug-free and having a strong work ethic.

3. Structure and discipline:  Companies appreciate veterans’ experience in following established procedures.

4.  Expertise:  Companies value veterans’ occupational skills, job-specific experiences and understanding of the military community.

5.  Dynamic environment:  Veterans are accustomed to performing and making decisions in dynamic, rapidly changing circumstances.

6.  Effectiveness:   Company representatives reports that veterans “get it done”.

7. Proven Success:  Some organizations hire veterans largely because other vets already in their organizations have been successful.

8.  Resiliency:   Veterans are accustomed to working in difficult environments, traveling and relocating.

9.  Loyalty:  Veterans are committed to the organizations they work for, which can translate into longer tenure.

10. Public Relations:  Some companies have found that hiring vets has marketing benefits
